Two Cents From The Activist In Me

I may sound unsympathetic. Believe me, I am not. I mourn all loss of life during the present administration. As long as 45 is in office, there will be casualties of his campaign to throw us all back to the darkest periods in American history.

The terrorist attack in Charlottesville was inevitable. When hate groups like neo-nazis and the Klan support a presidential candidate that wins, the result is nationwide racial strife and violence against non-whites. While the event at the University of Virginia was tragic, I saw it coming the day after the election, and I’m sure that I’m not alone. The only people who have the nerve to be surprised by Charlottesville are the people who have deluded themselves into believing that racism doesn’t exist anymore.

Do you believe it now?

The mother of the 20-year-old who plowed his car into a group of counter-protesters: “I don’t get involved in his political stuff”. Your son is into “white power”, and you considered that something that you could afford to ignore? Mm-hmm.

Why does everything have to be about race? Because America has always been about race.

I beseech you all, therefore, to stop acting like 45’s behavior—and both of his pathetic statements on the matter—is something new. Stop trying to treat this administration like it’s anything that resembles normal. Stop asking why he’s not acting like a responsible commander-in-chief. And stop expecting him to change his sleazy 70-year-old habits. The one thing that 45 has been consistent about is his character, or lack thereof. He showed his true colors as a racist, sexist, elitist pig throughout his entire campaign, and none of that has changed now that he is president. Who expected him to do some overnight character flip, like Ebenezer Scrooge?

I didn’t. I don’t.

This is real life, not a 19th century novel. In real life, a pig will always be a pig. Even if he’s dressed in a suit and tie.
